Boat-Inspired Community Center : Esbjerg Maritime Center

Design studios Snøhetta and WERK Architecture join forces as the two design the new circular Esbjerg Maritime Center along the coast of Esbjerg, Denmark. It is a wooden community center that hosts water sports and the overall design is inspired by boat construction.

It sits on an artificial island and celebrates the maritime traditions of the Danish seaport town. The two international studios were commissioned for this project by the legislative body Esbjerg Municipality with the goal of bringing the community together through water sports. It is also a place that aims to be a social hub as well with a wooden circular structure that glows at night, giving it the suitable nickname of ‘The Lantern.’
